37-Week Doctor Visit
>> Tuesday, July 7, 2009
Ugh. I think I almost forgot how horrible this feeling is -- that achy, crampy menstrual soreness. I'm not going to be excited to get back to that. I was prepared for the pain of tonight's cervical exploration, but it wound up being worse than last week's, complete with these menstrual-like cramps. Which, according to today's baby e-mail update, is how labor pains start, so I guess I should get used to it. And it's only going to get worse, right?
We only waited for a few minutes tonight, which was nice, and then I got weighed (below) and blood-pressure checked (good) and "Undress below the waist." Ugh.
Dr. G came in and asked how Baby and me were doing, to which I responded "Getting terrified." She made some small talk about how women have been doing this forever and I'll be fine. She listened to the heartbeat (good) and measured my belly (perfect -- just where I'm supposed to be, she said). Then she put on her gloves and I hunkered down for her to attack my insides.
It definitely hurt more than last week, although she said that it should start hurting less and less as the baby drops and they don't have to reach up so far to check things. After what felt like a hellish forever, she reported that I'm "still" about one centimeter (which was news to us, because Dr. A didn't report any dilation last week), but I'm "nice and soft" at about 75 percent effaced.
Also, my Strep test came back negative, so no worries there. "See you in a week!" I hobbled off the table. Bill said he had expected her to say I was five centimeters dilated and we had to go to the hospital. I'm glad she didn't say that.
I requested a Monday appointment for next week, mostly so we can see Dr. A instead of Dr. G, but I gave the excuse that Tuesday is my birthday. It's also going to be interesting because I keep saying that I'm going to go into labor on July 13, which is Monday. We'll see if Baby Pavlou and Dr. A agree with that.
